“So, I’ll be away for a couple of weeks,” Layla told Daniel between sips from her second cup of coffee.

He’d been clearing away their breakfast plates but paused to look at her in consternation. “Where are you going?”

“Europe. I’ve been told there’s a promising research subject in France. It’s a kind of field trip. ”

Wow. She’d be out of the country for a whole fortnight.

As students Daniel and Layla had sometimes gone their own ways for several weeks; he’d missed her, naturally, but he’d never been this bothered.

It must have been that over-vivid dream.

He tried to keep his voice casual. “Two weeks? That's a long time for a meeting.”

“Well, there might be one or two art gallery visits — and plenty of work, too. There’s a young woman who used to have psychic abilities; my job is to figure out how she lost them.”

“Psychic abilities,” Daniel scoffed. He’d always taken Layla’s interests with a pinch of salt, though he usually indulged her. Today he was feeling feisty enough for a bit of gentle teasing.

The truth of it was that for the first time in days, he felt physically comfortable inside the chastity cage. His erotic dream (or at least the night-time relief it had brought) had calmed his body down, made his cock less inclined to swell and strain between the bars.

Layla continued, “A wealthy woman paid for my martinis and offered a generous donation. It would have been rude to take her check without also accepting her intern.”

Daniel was surprised at how jealous he felt. “So his first job is to be whisked off to Europe by his stunningly beautiful female boss. I bet he can’t believe his luck.”

Layla laughed. “You’re right about the ‘stunningly beautiful female boss’ part but as for the rest … it’s a she.”

Daniel had no particular reason to feel relieved about that, but he did.

“You’d like her,” Layla went on. “If we weren’t flying out immediately I’d introduce you. Oh well, there’ll be plenty of time later.” She paused, held him with her gaze. “Her name is Merryn.”

Before he could stop himself he’d exclaimed, “Merryn!”

“You know her?”

“Well I ran into a girl … but no, that would have to be someone different. I can’t see ‘my’ Merryn applying for an internship. She seems happy with her current boss.”

“Really.” The corners of Layla’s mouth twitched. “Well, Daniel, I must love you and leave you. I haven’t even finished packing yet.”

His heart sank.
